Abstract

Along with advances in implant technology and surgical techniques, the interaction between implant materials and the surrounding biological tissues has become of great interest for achieving optimal osseointegration. Protein adsorption to the implant surface, in particular, is the first biological reaction that triggers the cascade of events of osseointegration upon implant placement. The adsorped protein layer mediates cell adhesion to implant biomaterials, which ultimately determines biocompatibility of the implants. As a result, this process is affected by implant surface properties such as wettability, roughness, surface charge, and chemical composition. This review discusses current knowledge of the effect of implant surface characteristics on protein adsorption in the context of the physical and chemical properties of the implant surface.
